Lot Description
A rare and exciting offering for advanced Liberty Seated quarter enthusiasts. While the discovery of the New Orleans Hoard in 1982 made that facility's quarter issue of 1841 relatively obtainable in Mint State, its identically dated Philadelphia Mint counterpart benefited from no such finds. The few Mint State survivors of the 1841 Philadelphia Mint, therefore, survived either as a matter of chance or, in rarer instances, as coins acquired directly from the Mint in the year of issue for use as gifts or keepsakes. Writing in his 1991 reference on this series, Larry Briggs assigns an impressive Rarity-6 rating to the 1841 in Mint State, while Q. David Bowers accounts for 35 to 45 Uncirculated survivors in his more modern (2016) Guide Book of Liberty Seated Silver Coins. Offered is a sharply struck example with bold, handsome toning. Generally mauve-gray in appearance, direct lighting calls forth more vivid undertones of iridescent cobalt-blue and reddish-apricot. Impressively smooth for the assigned grade.
