This is a very scarce Carson City double eagle in a great collector grade. Circulated examples are rarely offered in auction, and this is a very pleasing survivor of a mintage of only 13,180. Moderate, even wear is seen on both sides, the devices still show a boldness of definition. A glass reveals a few hairlines, but the surfaces show considerable surviving luster that clings to the attractive honey-wheat gold. PCGS 10, NGC 14. Only two PCGS coins have ever sold in auction, the most recent selling for $6,300 in March 2018 and the current CU value is listed at $6,250.
