Lot Description
1885-S Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-101, the only known dies. Rarity-7. MS-61 (PCGS). OGH--First Generation. This richly toned example exhibits blended olive-gold, steel-blue and charcoal-rose patina to both sides. The luster remains full with a satin to softly frosted texture shining forth nicely as the surfaces rotate under a light. Sharply struck overall and smoother in hand than one might expect at the assigned grade level. A lower mintage issue from the later Liberty Seated dime series, the 1885-S was produced to the extent of just 43,690 coins. Gerry Fortin (seateddimevarieties.com) describes Mint State examples as "very rare" and further states that the 1885-S is "the key date for With Legend San Francisco dimes." This is the first Mint State coin that we have offered in more than five years, which fact underscores the fleeting nature of this opportunity for the advanced collector. Provenance: From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection. Earlier from Superior's H.W. Blevins Estate and George Bodway Collections Sale, June 1988, lot 4495. PCGS Population: 2; 8 finer (MS-66 finest). PCGS# 4695. NGC ID: 23B2.
