Lot Description
1820/19 Matron Head Cent. N-3. Rarity-2. MS-64 BN (PCGS). Considerable red-orange luster illuminates the protected regions of this wonderful near-Gem, accompanying otherwise deeper navy and chocolate brown coloration. A carbon spot between the first two letters of CENT is the only noteworthy blemish across either side. The dies exhibit a modest fatigue, with flowlines apparent and denticles weakened on the reverse. The central elements remain suitably bold, and the diagnostic repunching on the date is sharp and readily apparent beneath a glass. This specimen undoubtedly ranks among the finest survivors from these dies, as PCGS has certified only 7 coins finer across all 1820/19 varieties and color categories. Earlier offered as part of the Adam Mervis Collection of Large Cents and certainly destined for a similarly impressive cabinet of early copper. Provenance: Ex Heritage's sale of May 2003, lot 5140; Heritage's sale of the Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection, January 2014, lot 2060; Robert Kellert. PCGS Population: 12; 3 finer through MS-65 BN (all 1820/19 varieties) PCGS# 1618. NGC ID: 2257. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
