- 1856 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-64 (PCGS). Secure Holder. This early date proof 3CS is an elusive issue in today's market, the current online version of The PCGS Population Report estimating that only about 60 coins are extant in all grades from an unknown original mintage. Uniformly mirrored in finish, both sides of this boldly patinated near-Gem are layered in blended pearl-gray, rose-gray and golden-olive shades. We see few outwardly noticeable marks and, indeed, the surfaces present as more or less smooth to the unaided eye.
