- Our multiple offerings in this sale notwithstanding, attractive 1801 BD-2 eagles in Choice AU and Mint State grades are rare relative to demand for them from advanced gold type collectors. This solidly graded PCGS AU-55 specimen retains much of the original finish, an other frosty texture yielding to semi-reflective tendencies as the surfaces dip into a light. Attractive bright medium gold color with underlying olive highlights. Faint adjustment marks (as made) along the upper left reverse border inhibit the detail both in that area and at stars 1 through 4 on the obverse, but otherwise we note a bold to sharp strike throughout the design. There is evidence of light numismatic handling from an earlier generation here, not uncommon on pre-1834 U.S. Mint gold coinage, but no sizeable marks are evident and the eye appeal is pleasing. BD Die State b/b.
