Lot Description
33.5 mm. Handsome deep golden brown surfaces with nuances of faded red lingering on both sides under a slightly dusky original patina. A pair of slightly darker patina lines cross the obverse. An immensely fresh-looking example that appears to have never been tampered with in any manner. A trace of softness is noted on the higher points of the motif, but this is not unusual for the issue. While nice examples do appear on occasion, it is not unusual to find this issue in circulated grades. This suggests a degree of acceptance by people who either occasionally passed them as cents in circulation or carried them as mementos of Washington which the thoughtfully accomplished portrait and large size make them ideal for. The original collector envelope suggests this was acquired in 1969, but the source is unclear.
