Lot Description
1811 Classic Cent. S-287. Rarity-2. AU-53 (PCGS). Struck on generally below average planchets derived from poor copper stock, Classic cents of 1808 to 1814 are among the most challenging early U.S. copper coins to find in high grades and with smooth, problem free surfaces. Certainly a superior example, this lovely AU combines boldly defined, minimally worn devices with a tight, satin to glossy texture. Dominant deep brown patina to both sides, with mottled orange-brown highlights largely confined to the obverse. Well balanced definition between the obverse and reverse is also a rare attribute for the type, as examples in all grades are usually more softly detailed on the former side. This is a coin that is certain to appeal to the quality conscious bidder.<br /> There are only two known die marriages of the 1811 cent, with S-287 readily identifiable as a "perfect date" (i.e., it is not an overdate).
