- 1854 Liberty Double Eagle. Small Date. EF-40 (PCGS). An otherwise honey-rose piece that reveals subtle crimson red undertones here and there on the reverse. Plenty of luster remains in an EF double eagle of the Type I design, and light wear is largely confined to the high points in and around the centers. Scattered abrasions include a few moderate size marks to Liberty's cheek and in the reverse field. This early date Liberty double eagle issue is similar in overall rarity to the 1852 and 1853, but significantly rarer in the finer circulated and Mint State grades.
