Lot Description
Obv: William Barber's low relief copy of James Barton Longacre's famous Indian Princess design. Liberty is seated left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1872 below. Liberty is wearing a Native American headdress, supports a liberty pole with her right hand, and her left rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. There are two flags behind the portrait, one of which is ornamented with 13 stars. Rev: An olive wreath surrounds the denomination COMMERCIAL DOLLAR, weight 420 GRS, and fineness 900 FINE, with two crossed cornucopiae between the words COMMERCIAL and DOLLAR. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above, and the motto GOD OUR TRUST is inscribed on a scroll at the base of the wreath. A delightful Choice specimen, the obverse displays a halo of cobalt blue peripheral toning around a center dressed in gently mottled rose-gray and russet iridescence. For the reverse we note mottled iridescent champagne-apricot, rose and cobalt blue undertones to warm olive, rose-gray and pinkish-silver patina. Appreciably mirrored in finish, both sides are fully struck and very nicely preserved.
This glorious specimen is one of only four plain edge silver impressions from these dies traced by the uspatterns.com website, although Saul Teichman questions whether the Bolender, Vickery-Paramount 72 ANA(?), Bowers and Merena 1/93 coin and that offered here are the same. If so, the extant population would be a mere three coins. Either way, Judd-1215 is a major rarity, and the present example boasts undeniable originality and strong eye appeal that will catch the eye of discerning pattern enthusiasts.
