Lot Description
What an AMAZING Proof double eagle! The mintage of Proof double eagles nearly doubled between 1891 and 1892, with the later date showing a mintage of 93 pieces struck for collectors. It is surmised that due to the extremely low mintage of business strike double eagles the previous year, contemporary collectors, in anticipation of another very low mintage issue, ordered more double eagle Proofs than the other denominations of the year. Today, perhaps 30-35 are thought to exists in all grades and designations. This CHOICE and original 1892 has the initial look of a higher grade, and honestly we would not be surprised if one day we saw this coin in a PR63+ DCAM or maybe even a PR64 DCAM holder (no guarantees). The visual impact of the deeply contrasted Cameo finish is dramatic. The mirrors are deep and very flashy reflective. There are no serious marks or lines of any kind seen anywhere, even with the aid of a strong glass. The eye appeal is spectacular! PCGS 1, NGC 1, CAC 2. The NGC coin sold in April 2016--so long ago as to make it irrelevant. The current CAC CPG value is $79,200 and the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $72,500. With every grade higher showing price guide figures well above $100,000, this is the PERFECT coin for someone looking for a rare date double eagle Proof without breaking the bank. Good luck. Cert.
