Tied for Finest Certified with CAC Approval
1856-O Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.
This is a sharply defined, lustrous near-Mint 1856-O half eagle with much of the original frosty finish remaining. Some modest semi-reflective qualities can be seem in the fields and are very attractive. Sharply struck in most areas with wonderfully original color in deep honey-gold and olive.
With just 10,000 pieces produced, the 1856-O is tied with the 1892-O as having the lowest mintage in the New Orleans Mint half eagle series. This issue is similar in rarity to the 1855-O with an extant population of only 90 to 110 coins (per Doug Winter, 2020). Far superior to the typically offered VF or EF survivor, the present example would serve as a highlight in an advanced Southern gold cabinet.
